YO! I'm Malik Carter and I am a film maker hailing from South City St. Louis, USA.

Being not only half of my neighborhoods black population, but also the only kid within my age group resulted in me spending a lot of time alone growing up. From what I can remember, most of my childhood and adolescence was spent dabbling in different art forms (my father was a professor and gallery runner, so I spent a lot of time in studio spaces) and various random hobbies. My attention span was no different than anyone else’s when they were young, so as to be expected from a child only about a handful of these hobbies lasted over a week.

On my 9th birthday my father gifted me my first skateboard and I still have yet to fall out of love with scraping my elbows against the pavement. After a few years of skating flat in my driveway I linked up with some of the other kids from school and began to shred the streets of South City. My new voyages skating allowed me to go on adventures in parts of the city I had never even heard of, as well as meet some life-long friends. As time went on, so did my love for skating.

One night after watching The Dark Knight at a friend’s place I realized my passion for film and decided that I wanted to direct and write feature film, even though I had never picked up (or even seen) a video camera in my life. I soon began to funnel some of that passion for skating into film making and began recording videos of my friends and I skating from my LG Chocolate, as well as teaching myself how to write. To this day I still reference the work of Aaron McGruder, Dave Chappelle and Kevin Smith whenever I am feeling creatively stagnant, as they heavily influenced me during the early developmental period of my writing style, although it has made drastically changed from telling dick and fart jokes. Film makers like David Fincher and Quentin Tarantino also impacted my development as a writer, as they peeked my interest in experimenting with dialogue and character driven narratives.

As I have gotten older my love for skating and film began to coincide as my friends and I continued to make skate videos, and my writing began to focus more on skate and hip-hop culture. By high school I was logging hours writing on Hip-Hop and skate blogs  and forums (posts that have since been removed) and the worlds of my scripts began to reflect the ominous world of skating after dark that I had grown to inhabit and the new music I was discovering.

Today my work is an amalgamation of everything that I love. I am still following my childhood pursuit to become a feature film writer and director, as I continue to write scripts daily along with the occasional blog post or essay, and my skate coverage has transitioned into covering my friends as they take over the local creative scene. I also have gone on to work on several of my own short films in addition to serving as not only a Cinematographer, but also an Assistant Director, Assistant Camera, and Production Assistant on numerous sets. My every growing love for music has unexpectedly brought me into the world of broadcast and audio production, as I now serve as a Studio Producer at KWRH-LP, a local low frequency radio station in Webster Groves, and I continue to learn more in that field everyday.
